DETROIT CHAPTER HISTORY

Paulina Johnson

Bryan Howard, Detroit Chapter President

The Detroit Chapter was incorporated in 1976 with the vision of establishing and maintaining an effective communication device for the African-American manager. Our mission is to assist in the creation of intellectual and economic wealth within the African-American community. In 2018 the Chapter elected Bryan Howard as President.

Bryan believes in the power of leadership and has spent most of his career advocating for his country and community. His passion is evident in the work he does as a Program Facilitator with Winning Futures, an innovative and nationally recognized school-based mentoring program, helping local high school students overcome challenges and achieve academic success. Currently, he oversees programming at two high schools in southeastern Michigan and has plays a key role in curriculum design and implementation of their revolutionary “Workforce Prep” model.

Bryan is a decorated military veteran, he served 20 years in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. His Navy highlights include the recipient of the “Naval School of Health Sciences Clinical Excellence Award” as he graduated with Honors and High Distinction ranked 1st in his class as a Urology Technician. In 2000, he was selected by the United States Surgeon General as a Subject Matter Expert for Naval Urology Technicians, for his work with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL); a cutting age noninvasive surgical procedure.

In 2005, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom he was member of Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF) Kuwait. This unit was the first ever deployed hospital unit composed of sailors from around the world as part of a joint operation with the Army. While in Kuwait, Bryan’s leadership was on full display. Within one month he was selected to lead the largest joint military patient care facility in the country. He led a staff of 100 Sailors responsible for providing quality health care to over 500 patients per week. All his hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, he went on to make history. Bryan was the first Navy Sailor to win the 1st Medical Brigade, Army “Silver Knight” Senior Non-Commissioned Officer award in Kuwait, regardless of the fact he was in the Navy.

Prior to empowering youth with Winning Futures, Bryan was the Process Excellence Manager for the Detroit based facilities management company Powerlink. While at Powerlink he served as the company’s Corporate Trainer, developing the use of alternative employee learning methods; peer coaching, e-learning, and job shadowing to support employee’s workforce development and organizational benchmarks.

Bryan received his bachelor’s degree for the University of Phoenix and a MBA in Entrepreneurship from Trident with graduate certificates in International Business and Strategic Leadership. Prior to becoming Detroit Chapter President, he served in the role of Director of Corporate Relations.
